Mitochondrial Clinical & Research Network (MCRN)
A multinational collaboration of experts on mitochondrial disease
Laurence A. Bindoff, MD, PhD, is Professor in Neurology, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, Norway. Professor Bindoff has a science (Biochemistry & Genetics) and medical training (specialising in Neurology) from the University of Newcastle, UK. He moved to Bergen in 1997 and took up a position as Professor in Neurology, in 2001. As a neurological scientist, Laurence Bindoff has specialised in inherited neurological diseases with special focus on mitochondrial diseases receiving his doctorate in mitochondrial disease from the University of Newcastle (Title: Defects of mitochondrial oxidations) with commendation.
His clinical activities focus on a specialised neuromuscular/neurogenetic service that sees patients with all types of inherited neurological disease albeit with particular focus on mitochondrial & muscle disease. He leads a research group of 5 including both PhD and post-doctoral fellows.
His main areas of research are mutations of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and nuclear genes that cause mitochondrial dysfunction. One major focus of research at present is the diseases caused by POLG mutations, including both patient based studies and the generation of a mouse model.
Charalampos (Haris) Tzoulis is a consultant neurologist and research group leaderat the Department of Neurology, Haukeland University Hospital, and the University of Bergen, Norway. Dr Tzoulis leads a research group (http://www.uib.no/en/rg/neurodegeneration) dedicated to the study of human aging and in particular Parkinson's disease. His mission and long-term aim is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying age-related neurodegenerative disease and to design novel therapies.

Omar Hikmat, MD is a consultant paediatrician working at the Paediatric Neurology section- Paediatric Department, Haukeland University Hospital. He has a special interest in paediatric neuro-metabolic, mitochondrial disorders and complex epilepsy.
Main research interest is within mitochondrial medicine and in particular POLG related disorders. He is responsible for the National Norwegian POLG registry and currently doing his PhD (Translating recent advances in mitochondrial medicine to clinical practice) at the Department of Clinical Medicine (K1), University of Bergen.
